Josh Awtry is the executive editor and vice president for news in Gannett’s Carolina region, where he oversees the newsrooms of The Greenville News and Asheville Citizen-Times.
He believes in no-holds-barred dialogue between newspapers and their readership, using in-depth digital data, focus groups, cultural anthropology and old-fashioned shoe-leather journalism to improve beats, coverage and the level of discourse in a community.
He received Gannett’s Innovator of the Year award for 2012 for revamping the way a community newspaper interacts with its hometown. He has also received back-to-back awards as the Innovator of the Year in 2012 and 2013 from the Colorado Press Association. Awtry’s work has been featured by the Columbia Journalism Review, the Society for News Design and the Poynter Institute.
Prior to his current assignment, he was the editor of the Coloradoan in Fort Collins. Awtry’s career began as a copy editor in Grand Island, Nebraska. He has worked at newspapers in Colorado, Idaho, Utah and the Carolinas. He currently resides in Asheville, North Carolina, with his recovering journalist of a wife, their two kids and too many pets.
Josh will present “How data, analysis and outreach can turn your newsroom into circulation pros” at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5. Learn more about the Conference here.

[dropcap1]H[/dropcap1]ello to all MACMA members and associates. It has been a very productive year for MACMA. After a successful conference this past May the MACMA Board of Directors quickly secured the beautiful venue which will be the site of this year’s annual conference The Hilton Durham near Duke University. This past October, MACMA presented the Fall Idea Sharing Symposium Series sponsored by SNPA, The News & Record in Greensboro, NC. and the three press associations. Attendance at the event in North Carolina was the largest ever since MACMA began the symposium series back in 2011 where many exciting ideas were shared among colleagues.
In early December of 2014 MACMA opened registration for the 96th Annual MACMA Conference which allowed members, vendors and associates ample time to begin making plans for what has become one of the highest rated sectional conferences in the country.
MACMA is proud to announce this year’s keynote speaker will be Bill Huffine and his “Five Bold Moves That Worked” presentation will be something that you won’t want to miss. Be certain to register soon for the conference and make your hotel reservations quickly. Last year rooms were fully booked and some folks had to make alternate accommodation plans so please don’t be left out! As always I ask you to please patronize our vendors. “Shop Local” and support those that support us. Without their support this fine organization would not exist. Please feel free to reach out to myself or any of those on the executive committee as well as our state directors if you have any needs. We are here to serve YOU!
Matthew Wolfe, MACMA President 2014-2015
