Learn more about Keven including the crazy story of how he met his wife, his desired super power, and how he intends to combat the greatest challenge he is facing in the industry today.

Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was born in Oklahoma City, Ok.  I moved to Cary, NC when I was 5 years old living there for almost 25 years.
Name of spouse – Where did you meet and when and where were you married?
I met my wife Laurie at a pool party and married her 3 months later in Cary, NC having been married now for almost 24 years.  The story of meeting her is great and I’ll keep it as short as possible.  She was leaving the party early and I didn’t want her to go so I scooped her up in my arms and acted as if I was going to throw her in the pool.  Unfortunately, I lost my grip and dropped her on the side of the pool on the concrete where she then rolled into the pool.  It was as if the 300 plus people at the party stopped everything they were doing, along with the music, and began to stare me down in disbelief.  I actually feared for my life for a brief few minutes.  As she exited the party in pain, I ran after her and asked if she was alright and if she would be willing to go out on a date sometime soon.  I believe she was still stunned from the fall and said yes, but it worked in my favor and we’ve been together ever since.

Biggest technology change in the past 10 years and how do you use it today?
Cell phones by far have appeared to be one of the biggest technology changes I’ve seen in the past 10 years.  It’s amazing what can be accomplished with the technology that we call phones.  I also think TV has morphed and continues to morph into something different.  There’s a large percentage of households that have cut the cable cord and that number continues to rise.
What is your favorite vacation spot?  Travel experience?
I love going to the beach with my family and spending time with them.
Give us a brief synopsis of your career (i.e., what and where was your first newspaper related position and where did your career go from there?)
Jim Puryear gave me my first job at The News & Observer where I worked as a district manager in Chapel Hill, NC.  I later transferred into Fuquay Varina, NC where it was closer to my home.  In 2001, I took a job with Cox Newspapers in Greenville, NC as operations manager and one year later became the circulation director.  I left Greenville, NC in 2016 as the regional director of audience development becoming the general manager of The Wilson Times.  Most recently I was promoted to president and publisher of The Wilson Times, The Enterprise, The Daily Record, The Courier-Times and Adams Graphics.
How, when and why did you get involved with MACMA?
I went to conference several years ago and was asked if I wanted to be on the board.  Great experience and networking opportunity that is unmatched by any other.
What is the one thing you wish you were able to do or change in the your job or industry?
I want to make a bigger impact on each of the communities we serve through events, forums, etc. growing our engagement in the community.  Our media industry tells the best story that no other can.
What is the “Biggest Challenge” you are facing in the next year?
From a broader perspective, we are facing ad revenue and circulation volume issues.  My goal is to continue to provide hyper-local news to the citizens of the respective areas in which we serve each and everyday and I believe we will prevail.
Have you ever had a mentor?  What did that person teach you?
Tim Holt is a great leader and mentor and provided me much of what I know today.  He is very patient and provided me with the insight needed to think differently and outside the box.
